Summer 2021 Children Activities

Dig, Plant, Grow (Grades K-12) Thursdays | 9am - 12pm
What does it take to make a seed sprout? Why are the trees so tall?  Roll up your sleeves, grab a trowel, and come learn about the magic that happens when you combine seeds, sun, soil, water, worms, and a little love. Plant seeds, harvest fresh vegetables and observe the interesting insects that help our garden grow. Create beautiful portable gardens, fairy houses, and artwork; make tasty recipes, sing songs, play games, and explore what grows in the forest, fields, and wetlands around us!

Big, Wide World (Grades 3-5) Mondays & Wednesdays | 9am - 3pm
This full-day program takes kids beyond the garden for up-close and personal interactions with the wild and wonderful natural world. Students develop a stronger sense of how we are all connected to the earth, to our food, and to our community. Big, Wide World is full of new adventures in field studies, earth science, botany, survival skills, water play, the discovery of the Valley’s natural history, and more!Every day of camp students will explore the rivers, lakes, wetlands, forests, rock formations, wildflowers, wild edibles, and farms of Gunnison Valley with resident expert guest guides. Adventures will take campers to fly fish on the Gunnison River, uncover the wonders of wildflowers on a hike through Taylor Canyon, and even try our hand at mountain biking at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. We will travel by biking, hiking, and journeying in the Mountain Roots 15 passenger van. Campers will need to bring a sack lunch to each camp.

Backcountry Cooking (Grades 5-8) July 6-7, August 3-4 | 1pm - 4pm
No kitchen? No problem. In this mouth-watering adventure, you will learn how to build a safe camp kitchen (cooking fire included!), design a backcountry menu, and prepare scrumptious, healthy meals that will energize and elevate your outdoor experience. Learn about preparation techniques, safe food storage, Leave No Trace cleanup, and survival skills. You will not be missing dessert during your next exploration into the wilderness!

Whimsicles Specialty Camp (Grades 5-8) Thursday 12pm - 3pm, Sunday 9am - 2pm | Register by the month
Do you find your student inventing new and exciting creations? Showing interest in the culinary arts? Mountain Roots’ Whimsicals camp offers middle school students a chance to be entrepreneurs in their own food business! During this three-week camp, campers will get to learn all the ins and outs of the food business, while creating Whimiscles, Mountain Roots’ popular gourmet fruit popsicles, to sell at the Crested Butte Farmers Market. Campers will drive flavor creation, marketing, and promotion while learning all about safe food handling, business strategy, commercial kitchens, and farmer’s markets.

Mountain Roots Gunnison Summer Camps
Create & Go! (Grades K-2, 3-5) Tuesday & Thursday | 12pm - 4pm
Let your imagination GO wild in the great outdoors! Spend your afternoon getting creative with nature-based art projects and outdoor destinations that take you on adventures all throughout the Gunnison Valley. Afternoons will be spent outdoors, going on forest scavenger hunts, making bee hotels, trying your hat at fly fishing on the Gunnison River, uncovering the natural wonders of wildflowers on a hike through Taylor Canyon, or even tie-dying your own pillowcase from dyes made from beets and flower petals! We travel by hiking, biking, or journeying in the Mountain Roots Van. We provide pick up from the GES Summer Experience programs.

Mountain Adventures
Archery & Disk Golf, Mountain Biking, Mountain Adventure Day, Ropes Courses. Get your child ready for the summer with Mountain Adventures! Your child will be immersed in incredible summer mountain adventures including mountain biking, archery, disc golf and a Mountain Adventure Day. This recreation program is for children ages 7 to 17.
Mountain Sports Team
The Mountain Sports Team mountain bike program offers the most comprehensive program in the valley for progressing your child's skills both on and off the bike. If your child is interested in practicing downhill, cross-country or enduro, we have a group for them.

Crested Butte Music Festival Camps
Bluegrass and Beyond Camp (Ages 8-14) | July 26 - July 30
At CBMF is a fun, 5-day music camp* in Crested Butte, Colorado. Bluegrass and Beyond is a music camp for instrumentalists (violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, vocals, and mandolin) aged 8-99 years old** and for all levels where students have the unique opportunity to work and study with some of the best bluegrass and folk musicians in the world during the day and hear them perform in the evenings. Students will play bluegrass and fiddle tunes, learn and practice improvisation skills, write songs, explore other electives such as vocalizing while playing an instrument, and advance individual skills through instrument break-out sessions. An exciting culminating student performance will take place at the end of the week during the Crested Butte Arts Festival.

Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory Nature & Science Camps
Our purpose is to train the next generation of scientists while cultivating respect and wonder for the natural world. RMBL’s nature and science camps take place at our field research station located in Gothic, Colorado and on surrounding public lands. In a beautiful outdoor setting and in the company of career scientists, we provide hands-on investigations of nature. Our programs introduce young people to the practices and processes of science through a variety of fun and interdisciplinary activities. Curiosity and discovery drive the learning adventures that take place each day with RMBL. We hope you’ll join us this summer!

Good Life Girls (All ages)
Saturday Adventures, Overnight Camping Trips, Tuesday Evening Workshops
OUR MISSION is to inspire all girls to live the good life by being true to themselves through confidence, positivity, kindness, and respect. Using our Move, Learn, Grow approach, we integrate outdoor adventure, creative projects, and interpersonal development activities. We always focus on a daily theme, examples include confidence, gratitude, empathy, and nature connection.

School of Dance Summer Dance Days
(Ages 3-5)
Our youngest dancers will fill their mornings with ballet, outside adventures, creative movement, arts & crafts, dance games, stories and more!  These themed dance days are a terrific opportunity for children to explore several types of dance while parents get some time to get things done!
Elementary Mindful Movement DANCE DAYS! (Grades K-2)
Students will have a range of classes from yoga, pilates, ballet, hip hop and more! The dance history project will let students hear the music from the time, read books about time period, see videos of time period dance and make up their own dance/story to time period specific dances.
Aerial/Acro DANCE DAYS! (Grades 3-5)
Join us for a day of bending and flying! Our movers will be split in 2 groups. Each group will have 1.15 hours with aerial and 1.15 hours with acrobatics. We will have a break in between classes to power up on healthy snacks, water and sunshine. Movers should wear tight fitting clothes, hair up and out of their face, bring snacks and a water bottle (labeled with name). Bare feet will be worn in classes but please wear closed toed shoes to camp for outdoor play.

Crested Butte Mountain Theatre (Grades 1-3, 3-5) | August 2 - 13
Theatre Imagination & Creation Camp
Calling all actors, actresses, and artists! The Crested Butte Mountain Theater and the Trailhead Children’s Museum are combining forces to offer a unique performing and visual arts camp. In this two week session, students will spend half of the day with the CBMT, learning the various components and roles that go into a theater production, along with games and activities that stimulate and nurture their imaginations! 
​During the other half of the day, students will work on a visual art project with Trailhead art teachers, to complement and elevate their theater experience. The camp will culminate in a free outdoor performance brought to life by the visual storytelling aids the kids created during the camp. This camp will appeal to any emerging artist whose talents extend beyond the stage or the page.

Little Red School House
Preschool & Infant/Toddler Center
We are a privately owned preschool and infant/toddler center located in CB South – 6 miles south of town – in a beautiful mountain setting. Little Red opened in 2001 with Teeny Red following in 2008, and it’s been a wonderful journey. We accept children as young as 3 months all the way up to Kindergarten age. We accept drop in visitors with prior reservations, and have a babysitting service as well.

The Gunnison & Crested Butte Library Summer Reading Program runs Thursday, May 27-Friday, August 20, 2021. All logs must be turned in by Sunday, August 22 by all participants. New this summer, teens and adults can participate!
